DAVID Furse produced a superb performance to win the Cornwall Golf Men’s Seniors County Stableford Championship at St Mellion on Wednesday, August 19.

Played at his home venue on the Kernow course, David’s 41 points was enough to take overall victory by three points as well as win the 60-64 category.

He was presented his trophy by club captain Chris Pountney who is also Cornwall Golf’s vice-president.

Other St Mellion members to finish in the top three in their respective age groups were Simon Parsons (third - 60-64), Malcolm Swales (third - 65-69), Alan Poole (first - M70-74) and Mike Marshall (third - 75-79).

St Mellion’s seniors - better known as the Fossils - held their Captain’s Charity Day on Thursday, August 20, to much success.

Some 55 or so Fossils turned out not only to play but support the captain’s charity, Victim Support, and did just that in spades with club members putting in various work. Eventually a superb total of £1,100 was raised.

Top of the tree after countback was Peter Lee with a whopping 42 points. A par plus three bonus points for keeping his drive with a wood on the fairway on the 18th gave him seven points and the win ahead of Jim McDonald on countback.

John Clements’ 39 was enough for third on countback aheaf of newcomer Grahame Tippett who received a bottle of wine for getting nearest the pin in two on the sixth hole. Another bottle of wine was up for grabs on the 7th hole for Nearest the Pin in Three but only using a putter, Captain Paul Osborne sinking his shot in three to take the prize.

Earlier in the week, the Fossils welcomed Bigbury to St Mellion and ran out 7-1 winners for a convincing overall victory of 11.5 to 4.5.

The ‘Nearest the Pin’ winners were Raphael (Fossils) and Bigbury’s Geoff Corbett.
