St Mellion Golf Club Seniors Section Latest – ‘The Fossils’
THE format for the Fossils competition on Thursday, August 13 was a Texas Scramble under bakingly hot conditions with the balls running well and frequently finding bumps and humps that dramatically influenced their resting place, writes Keith Field.
The greens were in great condition, and one easily forgot how recently they had received maintenance.
In addition to the Scramble, the final Summer Knockout match to complete the quarter-finals played out with victory for Andy Thomas and Steven Muggeridge, 7 and 6 over Mike Page and Pete Williams. Such was their excellent scoring, they never lost the lead established on their first hole eagle and built thereon.
There were some excellent scores recorded which made light of the challenges out on the course but insufficient to beat that of the final team out, yet again.
Ian Edwards, Michael Armstrong and John Smith walked into the clubhouse with smiles on their faces and presented their scorecard with a gross score of 66 which transposed into a nett 58.5.
No other team got below the 60 figure, but there were some tremendous scorings that deserve a mention.
Tony Prout, Colin MacDonald and Alec Brannan went around bogie free to take second with 60.1, while the third-placed trio of Paul Osborne, Brian Pound and Alan Evans had the lowest gross score of 63. However, their stroke allowance of just 2.7 precluded victory.
To conclude lauding the players, Andy Bryan, Peter Pascoe and Keith Abbott shot four birdies in a row after the turn in their back nine score of 30 points.
Results: 1 Ian Edwards, John Smith and Michael Armstrong – 58.5; 2 Tony Prout, Colin MacDonald and Alec Brannan – 60.1; 3 Paul Osborne, Brian Pound and Allan Evans – 60.3; 4 Andy Bryan, Peter Pascoe and Keith Abbott – 61.1.
