Pet pig's death after A38 jump

A pet pig died on Wednesday after she jumped from the back of a moving trailer on the A38.

Pregnant Gertrude, a three-year-old cross Saddleback, was being driven back to her home in Saltash by her owners, the Pearson family. She jumped over the six foot tailgate, and was attended to at the scene by police officers before a vet decided it was best to stop her suffering by administering a lethal injection.

Following the accident queues built up, with jams extending back to the roundabout at Marsh Mills.

Mr Pearson had bought Gertrude last month as a present for his children and she had been at a leisure park near Totnes mating with a male pig.

He said she had become one of the family, and they had all grown very fond of her.
