Newborn baby girl dumped in toilet
A new-born baby girl was discovered abandoned in the ladies' toilets at a Saltash service station yesterday morning (Thursd-ay).
After the discovery police immediately launched a search for the mother, as she may be in need of medical treatment. A spokesman for Saltash police said that they would like the mother to come forward. He said: 'Her baby is well, and we would like to know that she is well too.'
The baby was found by a member of staff at about 10am in Granada Services on the A38. The police were called, and she was then taken to Derriford hospital, Plymouth where she was said by a spokesperson, on Thursday afternoon, to be 'safe and well'.
Police are looking at CCTV equipment at the service station to see if they can identify the mother from footage.
Police said that it appeared that the baby, who was found in an all-in-one baby suit, wrapped in a blanket, was newly born. She still had her umbilical cord attached.
Parental responsibility for the baby has now been assumed by the social services department, based at Liskeard.
