A LARGE skip fire caused smoke that could be spotted by motorists using the A38 in south east Cornwall.

The blaze started at the Saltash Recycling Centre, near the Carkeel Roundabout, at just before 5.20pm on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Saltash Community Fire Station said: "Two Saltash appliances attended a large skip fire at the Saltash Recycling Centre.

"Four firefighters in breathing apparatus used foam to extinguish the fire after water wasn’t having an effect.

"The fire was located in the small appliances container which had a reasonable amount of fuel inside.

"First ever significant breathing apparatus wears for firefighter Jones and firefighter Pollard."
