Saltash Rugby Club’s current standing in the Western Counties West League has been recognised with the selection of two senior players to the Cornwall Development squad: no 15 Max Venables, last year’s skipper of the promotion winning team, and hooker Ryan Rayner, a regular in the team since moving up from the Colts.
Max was part of the County Championship squad which won the trophy at Twickenham last season. He is a former pupil from Blundells while father Dave Venables played with distinction for Plymouth Albion and Rosslyn Park and represented Cornwall and Devon against Australia during their 1981 tour.
Ryan was at Saltash Comprehensive where he was introduced to the oval game by former Liskeard Lion Brendan Lee.
Four Saltash players from last year’s successful Colts have been selected for the Cornwall U20s: Matt Scott, Brandon Andrews, and Harrison Reburn, all ex-St Boniface College, and Kieran Down, a local product. All four have made the step up to senior level and have not been found wanting.
Today (Saturday, November 28) Saltash entertain Torquay Athletic in the Western Counties League with kick-off at 2.30 pm. This will be the first visit of the famous Tics to Saltash and a large crowd is anticipated. Ashes are currently seventh with Torquay below them. For more rugby reports and pictures see this week's Cornish Times
