Liskeard Athletic 5 Bere Alston United 0

Liskeard remain unbeaten in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one west in 14 games this season after a resounding victory at Lux Park on Saturday.

The Blues, playing their first game for three weeks, collected the points thanks to goals from Ben Waters (2), Lyle Johnson, Jack Podmore and James Lorenz (penalty).

This win ended a run of three draws for Liskeard, who remain two points behind leaders Porthleven but with two games in hand.

Second from bottom Bere Alston gave a good account of themselves, and a penalty miss by Paul Simpson early in the second half when they were only 2-0 down proved pivotal.

After a nervy opening 15 minutes, during which the visitors could have scored on a couple of occasions, Liskeard broke the deadlock with an overhead kick from striker Waters after his initial effort had been scrambled off the line.

Macauley Thorp then sent a 27th minute header against the underside of the bar from a corner by Johnson, who six minutes later made it 2-0 when his curling left foot corner went straight in.

Bere Alston had the chance to reduce the arrears three minutes into the second half when they were awarded a penalty, but Simpson's spot kick was brilliantly saved by Jamie Blatchford.

Liskeard then scored twice in three minutes to make the game safe. First, skipper Jack Podmore produced a beauty of a free kick from 25 yards to make it 3-0 after 62 minutes.

Then Sam Rogers, who had only been on the field for a minute, went on a mazy run through the Bere Alston defence before unselfishly laying the ball back for Waters to finish.

Bere Alston thought they had pulled a goal back in the 67th minute but the effort was ruled out for offside, and after that, Liskeard cruised home.

Just when It seemed star striker James Lorenz would end the match without a goal, Liskeard were awarded a 90th minute penalty and Lorenz stepped up to convert his 30th league goal of the season.
