SALTASH United eased into the second round of the Les Phillips Cup with a hugely impressive 4-2 victory over Buckland Athletic at Homers Heath last night.

They took the lead in the 25th minute when Sam Hughes set up fellow striker Rubin Wilson to apply a clinical finish.

It remained 1-0 at the break, but Buckland started the second half brightly and Ryan Bush levelled matters in the 55th minute.

A corner by substitute Sam Farrant was headed in by skipper Dave Barker from close range to make it 2-1 to the Ashes four minutes later, and they took a firm grip on the tie in the 65th minute when Wilson grabbed his second goal after more good work by Hughes.

Bush kept his side’s hopes alive with his second goal eight minutes later, but Saltash sealed the victory six minutes from time when a storming run by substitute Scott Crocker gave Hughes the chance to provide a sumptuous finish.

Saltash now face a trip to Exmouth Town in the second round, on Wednesday, March 23, with a 7.30pm kick-off.

The Walter C Parson Cup quarter-final between Liskeard Athletic and Torpoint Athletic at Lux Park was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, and has been re-arranged for next Wednesday, March 2 (7.30pm).See next week's Cornish Times for a full report and reaction on their cup victory.
