Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League Division Two East round-up – Saturday, August 8

CALLINGTON Seconds are up to second after seeing off leaders Wadebridge Seconds by three wickets at Egloshayle Park.

The Greens knew anything but victory would all but ensure the Swans promotion – but a superb bowling display led by teenagers Zak Newton-Jenkins (2-43) and Ryan Hodge (3-43) and followed up by Dan Davis (2-17) – reduced the hosts to 89-8.

Veterans Charlie Ellis (34), Alek Gill (33no) and Steve Gunner (18no) got stuck in to get Wadebridge up to 164-9.

That target looked a long way off at 53-5 with opening bowlers Ellis (3-53) and Jamie Beare (2-40) running riot, but Blaze Eigenmann’s superb 64 not out (67 balls, eight fours) alongside chip-ins from skipper Rich Brown (17) and the excellent Hodge (25) ensured they moved above St Blazey, albeit 34 behind Wadebridge with 60 to play for.

Lanhydrock moved back to fifth after a convincing seven-wicket victory at bottom side Bude.

Ben Attfield took 4-40 from nine overs as the hosts slipped from 34-0 to 44-5, but they did recover to 194 all out thanks to David Sillifant (57) and Derek Piper (37). Jacob Eldridge returned at the end to mop up the tail for his 4-30.

The chase was a routine affair led by Christian James’ first senior century as the 18-year-old smashed 13 fours and four sixes in his 96-ball knock of exactly 100. Josh Taylor (38) provided the glue before Australian Sam Remedios made a rapid 33 not out.

Menheniot-Looe’s survival hopes took a huge blow as not only did they pick up just three points at St Austell Seconds, they are now 11 adrift of third bottom Holsworthy who surprised St Blazey.

Menheniot’s bowlers were plundered for 351-1 at Wheal Eliza, and could only muster 140 all out in reply, Mike Maiden making 48.
