Callington Bowling Club will soon have new equipment, thanks to a £1,810 grant from Tesco.

Club treasurer Di Jackson thanked Tesco and said: ‘This will be used to buy a new short-mat for indoor bowling to encourage more people to bowl and keep active all year round, and also to buy some smaller bowls, targets and obstacles to make bowling more fun to attract younger people to try bowls.’

The club, which was founded in 1948, is looking to improve its amenities and expand its membership.

Fund-raising co-ordinator Graham Body explained: ‘Our emphasis was particularly for younger players as we have had primary school children playing this year and wish to encourage them to continue and persuade more to take part.

‘Our aim was to enhance the playing facilities and encourage more people to join and also take part in playing both bowls on the green and short mat internally during the winter season.’

The sponsorship has come from Tesco’s Bags of Help fund which gives out up to £4,000 to community causes.

Presenting the cheque, Alan Woollcombe, Tesco community champion for the Callington store, said: ‘The bowling club has been a mainstay of the town for nearly 70 years.’
