Work has begun on a £2.2m flood-defence scheme at Calstock Quay.

Diggers were on site last week to begin creating a wetland area, and this part of the project should be completed by February.

The scheme is being created by partners including the Environment Agency, the Tamar Community Trust, and Tamar Valley AONB.

The Environment Agency’s Julian Brooke-Houghton said: ‘The existing defence for Calstock is reaching the end of its life, increasing the risk of flooding from high tides and river flows; this project will renew the protection to the centre of the village and create a new area of valuable inter-tidal habitat.’

The River Tamar Walkway and Wetland Project will also include the creation of a 30m permissive path walkway, linking up two public rights of way from Calstock to Okeltor.
