A village scarecrow competition has gained momentum and now a whole town and beyond are joining in.

In Trematon, near Saltash, Alex Spiller started a community Facebook page at the start of the lockdown to help people keep in touch and get support.

Meanwhile, having watched the new Wurzel Gummidge series, Alex and her family were inspired to make scarecrows just for a bit of fun. But after she posted pictures online, the word spread, and she says she was inundated with messages asking if others could join in.

Now a full-blown competition is under way and lots of local businesses have offered up prizes.

The competition is open to anyone to post their entry, with the name of their town or village attached, to the Trematon Facebook page, and Saltash mayor Gloria Challen has been invited to judge the winners.

’We have had over 60 entries so far, which has absolutely blown me away,’ said Alex.

For anyone who fancies it, there’s still time to enter the contest as the closing date has been extended to Friday.
