Trip to France is
cancelled
THE foot-and-mouth crisis has led to the cancellation of a twinning association visit to France.
Members of the Torpoint and District Twinning Association were due to travel to the twin town of Benodet in Brittany in early May.
However, after discussions with their French counterparts the visit has been postponed.
The Benodet twinners spoke to the French authorities who suggested it would be better if the visit was put off until later in the year.
The main committee of the Torpoint association was happy to go along with that suggestion.
Around 40 members had been planning to cross the Channel during the first weekend in May.
Opposition to 20
mph zone
THE plan for a 20mph zone in Torpoint has been criticised by the town council.
The idea for the zone which would take in 33 roads has been put forward by Cornwall County Council.
The speed limit would be placed on Goad Avenue and Trevithick Avenue and the residential roads leading off them. However the town council can not see the advantage of spending money on creating the zone.
Councillors say that speed humps which were installed several years ago already slow down traffic in the proposed zone. And they don't think that the police force, with its current resources, could properly enforce the speed limit.
The council is raising its objections with the county council and suggesting that money could be better spent on a speed camera in Trevol Road.
Mayor choosing
STAN Martin has been chosen to be Mayor of Torpoint for a second year.
At the mayor choosing this week, town councillors also voted that Diane Curran should be the deputy mayor.
Mr Martin, who has lived in the town all his life, said he was delighted to have been re-elected as mayor.
He praised the council for its backing during his first year in office and said that support from the people of the town had been fantastic.
Mr Martin's wife Christine has had a busy year as the mayoress and has been involved in several fundraising events for the mayor's charity, the Friends of Derriford Hospital Kidney Unit.
Diane Curran is a town and district council and is involved in many aspects of life in the town. She played a leading role in bringing the skateboard park to Thanckes Park.
The mayor making ceremony will take place in the council chambers on May 17.
Marine Drive plan
DETAILS of the appearance of a proposed new business complex on the site of the former Caradon District Council depot in Marine Drive, Torpoint, have been unveiled.
There will be silver cladding for the walls, a grey roof with racing green window frames and a lighter shade of green for the main entrance doors.
Illustrations of the new complex of around 25 units were shown to town councillors by Caradon architect Brian Wright.
Nuclear discharge surgeries
TWO surgeries about proposals to increase radioactive waste discharges from Devonport Dockyard were held in Torpoint this week.
The surgeries, part of a public consultation process, gave people a chance to ask questions to Environment Agency staff about the discharges linked with work on nuclear submarines.
DML is seeking permission from the agency to change the level of radioactive discharges into the River Tamar and into the air.
Special Service
CHURCHES Together in Torpoint are holding a united service to mark Palm Sunday this weekend.
The service will take place at St James Church at 6pm on Sunday (April 8) and clergy from different churches in the town will be helping to lead the worship.
Members of churches on the Rame Peninsula are also invited to the service.
Mast plan
MOBILE phone company BT Cellnet is planning to site a new mast at Trevol Business Park in Torpoint.
The lattice mast would be 15 metres high and would have two dishes 600cm wide.
The company has notified Caradon District Council of the plan and details can be inspected at Luxstowe House in Liskeard.
