An eagle-eyed street sweeper and three quick- thinking refuse collectors have been honoured for helping people in exceptional circumstances. Clive Newman, Gavin Thomas and Dave Cole were on their usual refuse collection round when they saw an elderly woman, who lived alone, suddenly taken ill. The trio helped the partially-sighted woman after she collapsed in her front porch. They called an ambulance and she has since made a full recovery. Colin Frizzel spotted a gold ring glinting in the sunlight as he swept the streets. Gill Niner had lost it on a night out in Liskeard and it had great sentimental value to her. Mr Frizzel was able to make sure she got it back. Caradon District Council has given all four of them Exceptional Service Awards and cheques for £25 as a thanks for helping people in exceptional circumstances. Councillor John Crago, the chairman of the Direct Services Group, said: 'Our staff deliver high quality services to the public on a daily basis, but what Clive, Gavin, Dave and Colin did was something rather special and deserves to be recognised. 'They exemplify the best in public service and I am delighted to see them receive their awards.' A second ring lost by Ms Niner, a white gold diamond solitaire, is still missing and a reward has been offered for its safe return.
