People can start the New Year helping the environment by recycling their Christmas trees.

During January, Caradon District Council will be collecting your used trees which will then be composted and transformed into soil conditioner.

Cllr Colin Riches, Caradon's ambassador for green issues and climate change, said: 'All you have to do is put your tree out on the appropriate day at the usual collection point for your household refuse and we'll take it away for you.'

The council will also be collecting garden waste on these days which will continue fortnightly throughout the year.

You can also recycle your Christmas cards around the area by taking unwanted cards to your local WH Smith, Tesco, TK Maxx or Marks and Spencer.

Last year Cornwall recycled nearly a million cards with money raised helping The Woodland Trust charity to plant thousands of new trees.
