Star broadcaster and writer Richard Madeley is the new President of Polperro Fishermen’s Choir.
Welcoming him on Polperro quay, where the choir give their free summer concerts, chairman David Lashbrooke said: ’The choir is truly delighted to have such a well-known and supportive person in the post.’
Accepting his medal of office as President, Richard, who lives nearby, thanked the choir and said: ’It’s a great pleasure to meet the choir and a real honour to take over the role.’
He said he looked forward to helping the ’wonderful institution’ of the choir in raising money for charity but explained that his own singing career was strictly limited.
Jokingly calling himself Mr President, he asked if that would make his wife Judy Finnigan the First Lady.
Entertaining the choir with tales of some of the amusing but ’highly inaccurate’ magazine articles about the celebrity couple, Richard Madeley asked to be kept fully informed of concert plans so that he could support the choir and attend when possible.
’I look forward to seeing you all in the future,’ he said.
