THE High Sheriff of Cornwall, James St Aubyn, has visited HMS Raleigh near Torpoint to be updated on how the Royal Navy trains its sailors for modern operations. Mr St Aubyn spent the day at the Royal Navy premier training establishment meeting staff and trainees. Highlights of his visit included a tour of the Royal Navy Submarine School where he was able to take a look through the periscope in the submarine operations room simulator. He also visited Pier Cellars, a former Elizabethan pilchard harbour and torpedo test site near Cawsand, where recruits are given the opportunity to work as a team and develop their leadership skills during Resource and Initiative training. During the afternoon, Mr St Aubyn inspected the latest recruits to complete their eight-week phase one training course during their passing-in-parade and took the salute.
