Shaun Elford knew his way around at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint when he joined the Royal Navy - because he'd already been working there as a civilian.

The 29-year-old was employed as a driver at the New Entry Training Establishment and was well acquainted with the Commanding Officer, Commodore Roger Lockwood.

Shaun's job at the base had included, from time to time, driving the commodore to and from his official engagements.

The former civilian driver is now Marine Engineering Mechanic Shaun Elford and this month he completed his eight-week naval basic training course at the base.

Commodore Lockwood was pleased to be able to witness Shaun on parade at the end of the rigorous course and to offer his congratulations and good wishes.

He said: "I am thrilled and delighted that Shaun has successfully completed his new entry training programme. He was fortunate to have some inside knowledge of what to expect before joining the Royal Navy and I know he is looking forward to the challenge and rewards that the service has to offer."

Shaun has now moved on to HMS Sultan at Fareham in Hampshire to complete his specialist training.
