Hopes for

free parking

in Saltash

PRESSURE may be placed on Saltash town council to arrange special events - which may prompt free parking, in a bid to attract more shoppers to benefit local trade.

The matter was discussed at the March meeting of the town's Chamber of commerce and industry. It was said that Liskeard had been given free parking for a certain period while works were ongoing to rejuvenate the Parade in the centre of town. This has not been forthcoming in Saltash, however, despite the detrimental effects on trade due to roadworks on the Tamar bridge.

Chamber members were told Liskeard had arranged special events in the town following completion of the Parade works, and if Saltash were to organise similar events a parking rebate might be considered.

It was suggested pressure be put on the town council, Caradon, and local MP Colin Breed, in order to win the same treatment as Liskeard. Chairman, Bob Frost, said he would wish to see more active lobbying on behalf of local business from elected representatives.

Car parking charges are set to rise throughout Caradon district in the next financial year.

Tamar Bridge

2002 finish

THE Tamar bridge is set for completion in 2002, according to project manager Richard Fish.

At the recent Saltash town council meeting, Cllr Stephen Tait asked for an update on the completion. Mr Fish said that they hoped, weather permitting, that the work would be completed with five lanes in operation in February 2002, with some work still needing to be completed after that date.

Careers evening

at College

SALTASH college will be holding a careers and information evening on Monday April 2, from 5.30 to 7.30 pm.

The evening is for those interested in part-time and full time courses leading to careers in computing, business and administration.
