REGARDING VE/VJ Day celebrations: 2005 is the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II both in Europe and the Far East, to this end the Royal British Legion are holding various events nationwide in commemoration. Liskeard Royal British Legion is also hosting a number of events throughout the summer and autumn, one of which is a children's 1945-style street party. It had been hoped that we could hold this outside Webbs House on the Parade for 60 junior school children. After approaching both St Martins and Liskeard Junior schools, letters were sent home with pupils informing parents of what we were trying to do with, I might add, the full backing of both schools. Unfortunately only a few pupils replied, so an appeal was placed in the Cornish Times for children to participate. This resulted in one phone call for two children to join in. So few were interested that it has become unviable. It is with great regret that Liskeard Royal British Legion has had to cancel the street party. To the children who were interested, we apologise. We would like to thank both schools, the Cornish Times, Liskeard RNA and others who supported this venture. The march and commemorative service planned for Sunday, August 7, will still take place at 10.30am from the Cattle Market Car Park. All are very welcome to join us.
