A meeting has been held of a forum arranged to investigate the matter of a number of names of the town’s fallen from the two World Wars being left off Saltash’s two war memorials.

At the meeting in the Guildhall, Barry Brooking said that not only had two names of Saltash firemen been left off the St Stephens memorial, but it had also been found that 49 more names from both conflicts were missing.

Cllr Sue Hooper, who chaired the meeting, welcomed relatives of Bernard Jasper, one of the firemen not named on the memorials, and former town councillor Peter Clements, who had produced evidence that names had been omitted after undertaking considerable research.

Mr Clements said he felt there could be others missing.

After lengthy discussions, those present at the meeting decided to present the evidence to the town council’s Burial Board so a working party could be set up to find out how the error could be rectified.

Mr Brooking stated that Bodmin had experienced a similar omission with its own war memorial and the town council there was hoping to rectify the matter.
