It was standing room only in Liskeard’s Public Hall as Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell set out his vision for ‘new economics’ for Britain.

Labour’s chief financial man said it was time for change in a system which sees ‘more paid to shareholders in dividends than to workers in wages’, said South East Cornwall Labour Party spokesperson Martin Menear.

More than 200 tickets were allocated for the meeting and further attendees from Cornwall and Devon squeezed in for the chance to debate the economic issues affecting people in this region.

High on the list was housing, and when the shadow chancellor spoke of the need to build council houses and address unfairness in the private rented market, there were cheers from the audience
