People attending St Matthews Fayre in Liskeard voted overwhelmingly against the return of grammar schools, say local Liberal Democrats

Local party members asked passers-by to place a ball in either a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ box in answer to the question: ‘Would you support the return of a system of grammar schools and secondary moderns in Cornwall?’ 73.5% voted against grammar schools and 36.5% voted for their return.

Phil Hutty, the Lib Dem Parliamentary spokesman in South East Cornwall, said: ‘I was not surprised to find the strong feeling against selection at 11. Marking out the majority of young children as failures is wrong. We have very good schools serving this area and they do not need the disruption this policy would create.’
