POLICE have warned that they will be using laser guns for an unspecified period – to catch motorists who speed on the A38 through the Saltash tunnel.

The speed traps have been set up in the tunnel after residents complained about the number of drivers who break the 30mph limit which operates through it. They say some motorists drive much faster than this, and they fear an accident will result.

The limit in the tunnel was higher until a year ago. It was set at 50mph, but this was reduced when the works began on strengthening and widening the bridge.

Hand held laser guns and mobile speed cameras are being operated randomly at each end of the tunnel. Those motorists breaking the 30mph limit will be dealt with depending upon the seriousness of their offence. If they are caught at very fast speeds a court case may well follow. Those committing less grave offences will face a fine and the imposition of three penalty points on their licence.

A police spokesman from Bodmin traffic unit said the officers will carry on with the traps until they are reassured that drivers through the tunnel are keeping to the limit.

The crack down began today, and is set to last for some months.

The road through the tunnel has three lanes, with no barriers between them, and residents say their greatest fear is that speeding cars could cross from the west to east bound lane, or vice versa, and create a pile up of cars.

Those driving through the tunnel and heading eastwards on the A38 will also find that the police are mounting a similar operation further east, at South Brent where a contraflow is in operation. This is also due to bridge strengthening works, this time on the River Avon bridge.
