ELEVEN inspirational people from South East Cornwall are among those who will be proudly carrying the Olympic Torch.

They will be part of the torch relay through 21 specially chosen communities in the county, including The Eden Project, Liskeard and Saltash, on the first leg of its nationwide journey beginning on Saturday, May 19.

They are among the thousands of people who have been chosen to carry the torch as it criss-crosses the UK in an 8,000-mile relay run before arriving at the Olympic Stadium on July 27.

The iconic Olympic Flame arrives on the evening of May 18 at RNAS Culdrose, with up to a billion people from across the world expected to have their eyes on Cornwall as they watch it leave Land's End the following morning at 7am.

There has been some disappointment that not all local torch bearers have been given their own town or area, but LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games) have said they have tried to place people within an hour of their home address.
