TESCO’S Callington Superstore has a new Community Champion.

Will Turner has taken up the role at the Tavistock Road store, with the aim of delivering a range of Tesco programmes to benefit local people.

Among the initiatives that he will be involved with are donating surplus food to local groups through the Community Food Connection scheme and supporting local projects through the Tesco Community Grants scheme.

The grant scheme enables people to nominate good causes in and around Callington that they would like to see benefit from grants of up to £1,500.

In recent years thousands of pounds have been handed out to Callington’s registered charities and not-for-profit organisations.

Will takes over the role from the store’s previous Community Champion, Carrie-ann Bailey, and he is looking forward to supporting the community in the town he has lived in since the age of 14.

He said: “I hope to continue the incredible work of Carrie-ann by helping the Callington community and supporting the amazing groups that make this such a fantastic place to live.

“This is a role I’m really passionate about because community work is something I’ve been involved in for a number of years.

“While at university, I was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Medal for the volunteering projects that I participated in and organised alongside my studies, namely an anti-sexual harassment initiative and a men’s mental health support service.

“I will be looking to assist local projects and groups by supporting them in applying for Tesco’s Community Grants scheme, helping them to run events or by donating Tesco products such as refreshments for events or prizes for raffles.

“I’d urge anyone wanting to know more about the sort of groups, events and projects we support to look at our Community Board behind the checkouts in our store.

“Any good causes with something going on that they think I’d be able to help with, please do get in touch. I’ll always try to support you as much as I can.”
