TWO Looe residents have just completed the first phase of this Royal Navy training at HMS Raleigh, with one of the new recruits claiming a top prize. Stuart Harrison, 20, joined HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy's premier training establishment, this winter for eight weeks of intensive training to turn him from a civilian to a sailor. Over the eight weeks, he has learnt the basic skills required by every sailor including seamanship, fire-fighting, weapons training and, most importantly, team work. Stuart was presented with the Owen Cup at his passing-in-parade. The cup is awarded weekly to the recruit who achieves the best overall marks during training. Before joining the Royal Navy, Stuart was a retail assistant but was attracted to the Navy because of the training and career prospects. The former Looe Community School pupil will now go on to HMS Sultan near Portsmouth to undergo his specialist training. Meanwhile, Navy Stores Accountant Luciano Uccella has also just completed the first phase of his Royal navy training. Luciano, 19, joined the Royal Navy in November and had to train for eight weeks to turn into a sailor.
