A LIVE music event in support of a Liskeard youngster battling cancer and his family has raised almost £4,450. Tickets sold out for the ‘Tackle it with Charlie’ night at the Eliot House Hotel featuring local bands Young Oliver and Young, Tez Ray and the Suits, and a solo acoustic performance by singer Chloe Carrubba. Local people and performers were all there to give their support to 15-year-old Charlie McKay, who is in Bristol Children’s Hospital undergoing treatment for liver cancer. After Charlie’s diagnosis, friends of his mum, Dawn, felt they wanted to raise funds to help the family through the difficult times ahead. Karen Lawrence, who organised Saturday’s event with Claire Collins and Rachel Rowe, said that people had been ‘so generous’ in supporting a raffle and auction on the night. While Charlie and Dawn were unable to come back to Liskeard at the weekend, they recorded a video message to be played to those attending the event. ‘We really felt involved, even from afar, because everybody was Facetiming us. We felt as though we were there,’ said Dawn. ‘Both Charlie and I are overwhelmingly touched by people’s generosity, prayers and wishes. At times like this it really makes you fully aware of how lucky we are to live in such a lovely community.’ Meanwhile, two friends of Charlie have been going the extra mile to help out by running in a CLIC Sargent event between Wadebridge and Padstow. Callum Aldridge and Molly Toms, both 13, have raised £569 for the charity which supports children with cancer and their families. Offline sponsorship of £290 raised by the pair during their five-and-a-half mile run will go direct to Charlie’s Fund. ‘Charlie is a friend of Callum’s from the Liskeard and Looe Junior Rugby Club,’ said Callum’s mum Angela. ‘I’m very proud of these two – they did well as it was a very long run.’ Further events are being planned for Charlie’s Fund, including a quiz night at Dobwalls Memorial Hall on April 15.
