Mobile phone mast is refused

Staff and parents at Fowey primary school greeted with relief the recent news that an application for a telecommunications mast near the school had been refused by Restormel councillors.

It had been felt that the 20 metre mast would be too close to elderly persons' accommodation, Fowey community college, primary school, and hospital.

A total of 21 letters of objection had been sent to the council, two of which contained a total of 26 signatures.

Other objections were regarding intrusion in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the fact that the mast would also be too close to residential properties, and unknown long term effects of microwave exposure.

The mast and its equipment were proposed for a site the Windmill industrial estate. The mast, applied for by Orange Pcs Ltd, would have been designed to mimic a pine tree, and would have served the Fowey and Polruan areas.

Planning officers had recommended approval.
