A MEETING will be held next week to discuss achieving Fairtrade status for Callington. The first Get Global meeting will take place at Cornerstone, the Fairtrade gift and coffee shop on Callington Fore Street, next Wednesday, October 25, at 7pm. Fairtrade goods are sold with an emphasis on giving producers in the developing world a bigger share of profits. A Get Global group spokesman said: 'Plymouth is a Fairtrade city, Tavistock is a Fairtrade town, so come on Callington, what are we waiting for? 'Don't be shy, no qualifications are needed to join our group, no age restrictions, just a sense of global justice.' The aim of the meeting will be to create a group of people interested in taking forward Fairtrade town status for Callington, to try Fairtrade tea, coffee and biscuits and to meet like-minded people To become a Fairtrade town, Callington must reach a series of requirements, some of which have already been passed. Callington Town Council has passed a resolution supporting Fairtrade and will be serving Fairtrade tea and coffee at its meetings. The town must also have: l Fairtrade products readily available in shops and served in local cafes and catering establishments l Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local work places, such as estate agents and hairdressers, and community organisations such as churches and schools. If it manages to meet the targets, Callington will be the first town in South East Cornwall to achieve the title. l For details about the meeting, call Jane Murray on Callington (01579) 382785 or pop in to Cornerstone.
