Throwing hot coins and fruit out of the Guildhall windows to waiting children in the street below, was the first engagement of the newly elected mayor of Saltash, cllr Bob Austin, with his wife Jackie on Tuesday evening. In his inaugural speech after being elected by the Town Council, the new mayor apologised to his guests for not being Cornish, he said: 'Both my wife and I were born in England, Devon to be exact, we emigrated to Cornwall 32 years ago by accident, but actually financial necessity.' The Mayor admitted that it was the best decision they had made. It was because of his pride in the town, said the mayor, that he decided to stand to town council two years ago as he wanted to give something back to Saltash.
