South East Cornwall's MP, Colin Breed welcomed a decision to keep one of the area's well-used post offices from being merged with a high-street retailer. The Post Office confirmed that Liskeard will be one of 373 flagship Crown Post Offices retained throughout the country. Liskeard Post Office won an award out of 520 branches for sales performance in September of last year. However, fears were raised after the Post Office trialled a scheme of incorporating Crown Post Offices in high-street retail premises. Colin Breed MP said: 'This is welcome news for the town and the people in the surrounding area. We require a dedicated and efficient service from the Post Office and I fear that this would have been lost if the management of Liskeard was handed over to a high-street retailer.' However, up to 70 Crown branches will now be incorporated into WH Smith stores. 'Unfortunately, the bigger picture does not look good,' said Mr Breed. 'The real struggle will be for the life-line services that smaller and sub-post offices provide for our communities.'
