Jolly's Cornwall Cricket League Four (East)

Looe v Veryan

At Looe on Saturday and won by Veryan by four wickets. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Looe were given a flying start by Jonathan and Peter Nance, the latter hitting a quick-fire 31. Skipper Robin Trethowan weighed in with 37, but despite double-figure contributions from Tim Shepley (15), Roger Carter (16) and Pat Newham (10), no-one played a really major innings, leaving Looe very concerned at tea that on such a good wicket and very fast outfield they needed forty-plus more runs. Veryan's bowlers all bowled tidily, the bulk of the work being done by Morley Johns (3-55) and Steve Raven (2-41) with M Matthews (3-34) and Clifford Johns (2-9) also among the wickets.

Veryan's reply was the tale of two innings. Rob Johns his five fours and two sixes in his aggressive 47 and skipper Robert Jobson played innings of the day for his 55. The captain's knock held the side together and contained nine fours and a six. A quick 17 from Jerry Moss saw Veryan to victory, realising Looe's early fears that they were indeed 40 runs short. Simon Farley bowled well with no luck to take 2-41 and Mike Pengelly was Looe's main wicket taker with 4-55.
