I would not in any way, denigrate the work done by the police in enforcing law and order but I think John Mashiter (letters 10.12.99) is very wide of the mark.
He attributes the law-abiding qualities of Liskeard's town-folk to the policing of the town.
Not so, Mr Mashiter. These qualities are almost entirely attributable to the way the towns-folk were brought up, the values their parents and families instilled in them, the knowledge that others have a right to live in peace and safety and that, although we may envy others their possessions, they are not ours to take or destroy.
The majority of folk are like this and will remain so, with or without a police force.
Unfortunately, others make a policeman's lot a far from happy one.
SHIRLEY MORSE.
