The main house on Looe Island looks set to be leased out and could undergo major renovations. The island was famously left to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust in the wills of the Atkins sisters, Babs and Evelyn, who bought the island in 1965.

Cornwall Wildlife Trust has confirmed discussions have been going on for six months with a couple who could become permanent caretakers of the island.

A Looe resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, but was adamant extensive work on the house was due to start in February, said: 'I am concerned something has gone on that shouldn't have.

'If that lease was sold why wasn't it commercially advertised? If there was a caretaking job going, why wasn't it advertised?

'I am just a bit uncomfortable about it.

'They are looking to spend many thousands of pounds in totally renovating the house from top to bottom.

'It is absolutely outrageous.'

Patrick and Mary Lidstone, who currently live in Looe, could be joining St George's Island's two permanent residents, Gus and Sheila Ravine, who are both elderly.
