The Squires Field Community Centre in Fowey is one of five good causes in the South West nominated for a ‘Britain Has Spirit Award’. If successful, they would win the regional prize of £1,000 and also be put forward for the national award, which has a value of £25,000. TV sports presenter Gabby Logan is part of the campaign, which is aimed at finding the best British volunteers. She said: ‘Britain has Spirit has launched to try and re-evoke a sense of community pride, and to honour those tirelessly giving their time and effort to make communities and neighbourhoods better.’ Currently there is no community space in Fowey accessible to all. The Squires Field group was set up to secure the old bowling club site to develop into a community centre and have been trying for the last 12 months. So far £3,000 has been raised to enable initial improvements to be made to the site. Award winners will be chosen by public vote.
