Football- Liskeard chairman reflects on the season

Now that the 1998/99 season has finally come to an end, Liskeard chairman Keith Lobb looks back on the past campaign both in Jewson South Western league and the East Cornwall Premier league.

During the season both sides had mixed fortunes, but the chairman says that the spirit within the Club has remained good throughout. "South Western manager Chris Burchell, has worked very hard for the club, doing duties far beyond what can reasonably be expected of a Manager," reports Mr Lobb.

"Chris spent many hours on the phone organising his players. On top of this, he has worked hard fund-raising and you will find him working on the pitch during many weekends."

With the side in the top flight of Cornish soccer the season has been hard for Chris but the Blues chairman is sure that with the support of the club, he will bring some success back to Liskeard in the near future.

The chairman continued: "The 1998/99 season was a building block for Liskeard; we managed to gain six more points than in the previous term and we moved one place up the table. This might not seem much, but for a new manager at this level of football, it was an excellent achievement. Mike Doel, who was signed by Chris early in the season, has been an asset to the club, and with Mike's experience coupled with Chris' enthusiasm, I'm sure that the club will go from strength to strength."

The East Cornwall Premier side had also done remarkably well under Martin Hodge. This was the first season as a Manager for Martin, and to take his side so close to winning the East Cornwall Premier League in his first season was another remarkable achievement.

Liskeard remain one of the top clubs in Cornwall, with much potential. "I am sure that it won't be long before we have some real success", said Keith.
