Students at Torpoint Community College who are preparing for tough outdoor expeditions received some tips and training from the experts. Treating hypothermia or heat exhaustion and coping with a wound when out in the field were just some of the first aid topics covered by staff from HMS Raleigh. Students also heard advice on how to take care of their feet while hiking long distances – this is important know-how for those getting ready for theDuke of Edinburgh Bronze Award expedition and the Ten Tors challenge. After a session at HMS Raleigh, the 40 students returned to the college grounds to learn about the equipment they would be needing and to pick up some camping and cooking skills. A spokeperson for the school said: ‘It was a successful day thanks to the medical staff at HMS Raleigh and TCC staff Lynn Trotter and June Porter. ‘Thanks also go to volunteers Colin Parton, Jen Hicks and Stuart Mitchell.’
