A young mum from Liskeard has praised a project which has been shortlisted in this year’s national Children and Young People Now Awards.

The project, known as Young Mums Will Achieve (YMWA), is an initiative for young and expectant mums, aged 19 and under.

The project supports them back into mainstream education and employment, while promoting parenting and life skills. Run as a partnership between Cornwall Council, the Cornwall College Group and Fit N Fun Kids, there are YMWA groups active across the county.

Katie Jones, 21, from Liskeard, said: ‘The programme helped me through both of my pregnancies, and supported me when I most needed it.

‘It also gave me the push to apply for a job, which I am currently still in, and I couldn’t be prouder. ‘I would strongly recommend YMWA.’
