Communities in South East Cornwall will be marking Commonwealth Day on Monday, March 14.

The Commonwealth flag will be raised in Saltash, Menheniot and Torpoint.

At 10am, Bill Mowbray, vice chair of Menheniot Parish Council will raise the flag in a short ceremony that will include a special message of good wishes from HE Kamalesh Sharma, Commonwealth Secretary-General, and a specially written Commonwealth Affirmation.

Residents are asked to meet at the Village Green at 9.45am. Light refreshments will be served afterwards in The Old School Hall, Menheniot.

Torpoint Town Council will participate with the Mayor, Councillor Mike Pearn MBE, raising the flag in Sparrow Park at 10am.

He said: ’It gives me a great honour to again represent the town in raising the flag on this unique occasion and pledging the loyalty of the town to the Commonwealth.

’The town is looking forward to celebrating The Queen’s 90th birthday by lighting the beacon in Rendel Park, 7.30pm on Thursday, April 21. Then, on Sunday, June 12 there will be a celebration party at Thanckes Park with entertainment from 2pm to 7pm.’
