A controversial grade two listed building is being put up for auction next month – with the condition that it is renovated. The Old Toll House on the bubble site at Maudlin Farm, Liskeard has a colourful history after a largely popular plan to redevelop the site into a cinema, restaurant, and bowling alley was withdrawn because of the listed building. Developers removed the plans after they were told the listed building could not be demolished. The auction is at the Nebula Hotel on Wednesday, November 8, and the guide price is £100,000 but the building has been uninhabited for some years, the structure is unsafe and its rag slate roof was stolen back in 1997. However, with the purchase of the property adjacent to the A38, comes a £90,000 grant for renovations from Concise Construction. The grant comes with conditions. Potential buyers have been told that work should start within three months of buying the property and should be completed nine months after. The house was originally built by Henry Rice, the famous local architect, in 1842 and it was used as a toll house for the Liskeard to Torpoint.
