DO you have great ideas that could benefit your community? A passion to see your town improved for the people that live here?
Liskeard Town Council is encouraging local people to apply for a role on the Council.
And if you’ve been considering it for a while, now is the time to take the plunge - as the deadline to apply is tomorrow! (Friday August 6). Interviews will be held early next week.
Some of the positives of being on the council for those that already volunteer include:
l Making a real difference that will help future generations to thrive
l Working with lots of different groups in Liskeard to bring good changes
lDeveloping your personal skills and knowledge in many different areas
lHaving a choice about the committees you take part in to suit your own interests and experience
Here’s what some of the current councillors say about the role:
"I’m really proud of my town and, as a parent, felt very passionately about making sure it was a town where there were really good opportunities for future generations."
"The town was welcoming when we moved here, and as we have the intention of making this our forever home, I wanted to support the community in some way. When an election to the Town Council was announced I thought this was a good way to get more involved in my new home town, and work with other people to help grow the economy for the benefit of all people living in Liskeard."
"I wanted to work together with other people and organisations to make positive changes in the town. I wanted to make the Town Council more open and responsive."
"I passionately believe in Liskeard. I worked in the town and listened to the aspirations of the residents: I thought I could usefully contribute to the town’s development for future generations. We are merely caretakers for the next generation."
A spokesperson for the Council members and staff said: "Town Councillors are people elected or co-opted to the Town Council to represent their local community – you do not need to be a member of a political party. We need all different types of people so that the Town Council reflects the community it serves, so whatever your age, background or skills you could be the perfect person, you just need some time, enthusiasm and commitment.
"The work our council does is both exciting and rewarding. An integral part of this work is the job councillors do: engaging with local people, groups and businesses to find out their needs; making decisions on the services and projects the council should take forward; and getting involved to ensure services are meeting the community’s needs."
