A Looe church celebrating its jubilee year is asking local people to contribute their memories and photographs.

West Looe’s Riverside United Church was formed 50 years ago when two Methodist chapels and the Congregational church in the town came together. The ecumenical partnership was one of the first of its kind in the country.

The golden jubilee celebrations will come to a climax in September and October, with two services, a week-long exhibition and a Cornish evening. The exhibition will feature displays of activities and events held at the church and its hall during the last five decades, as well as the notable achievements of some of those associated with the church, said treasurer Andrew Lightfoot.

‘The organisers would be delighted to hear from people who were baptised or married at Riverside, or had family members who were,’ said Andrew. ‘Photographs and stories will be integrated into the exhibition. A number of illustrated talks will also be presented during the week of the event.’

The Riverside United Church jubilee itself falls on September 22. A special service will be held on that evening, with another service to follow on Sunday, September 25.

The ‘Riverside and Riversiders’ exhibition will be held on October 3-7, with the Cornish evening rounding off the celebrations on Friday, October 7.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the exhibition should contact Dr Kathy Lang via email at [email protected] or call Andrew Lightfoot on 01503 264125.
