MORE than 2,000 children will help launch a brand new million pound football facility next week. The grand opening of the 3G pitch at Callington Community College will take place next week. The Football Foundation, Cornwall FA, local schools, clubs and local councillors will be invited to the event. Teams from Ginsters and Pirate FM have been invited to take part in a corporate game. The pitch is part of a £1.2million scheme which includes the full size artificial pitch, floodlights and a modern changing pavilion. The scheme has also seen a proper road created to the East Cornwall Tennis Centre and floodlights for outdoor courts. The whole college will get involved with the activities during the week. Students will be involved in a sponsored World Cup Challenge during their PE lessons. The students will be required to work with a football continually for an hour. This will involve the students taking part in a range of skill challenges including penalty shoot outs, ball juggling, slalom challenges, and passing exercises. Talented footballers from across the Callington School Sport Partnership will be invited to an academy where coaches from Plymouth Argyle and the Football Association will be putting the youngsters through their paces. On the Friday, primary students from the Callington area will take part in a World Cup mini soccer tournament. Primary schools in the area are currently designing a World Cup football and all the designs will be displayed at the event. Primary students will also take part in a sponsored kickathon prior to the launch at their local primary school. This will involve penalty shoot outs, target shooting and a dribbling challenge. Staff at Callington Community College have challenged a local secondary school to an 11-a- side match which will be played on the new pitch.
