NEW jobs at a South East Cornwall supermarket will now no longer be in store after a change of plan.

Morrisons had recently gained planning approval for a home delivery service from its Liskeard branch.

The development had promised to create up to 50 jobs, with groceries to be picked from the store and delivered locally out of a new storage and distribution unit.

But now the company says it will be running the service from its Plymstock and Exeter stores instead.

Liskeard Town Council says it is extremely disappointed with the change.

A Morrisons spokesperson said that the decision had been taken as it was felt ‘customers could be better served from Plymstock and Exeter.’

Liskeard Town Council had given its wholehearted support to the original scheme, stating that the new jobs were a positive. While mindful of the potential impact of online deliveries on the town centre and on the environment, councillors felt that those people ordering groceries online already might choose to switch to the locally-based option.

A spokesperson for the Council said: ‘We are extremely disappointed to hear that Morrisons are withdrawing their plans to operate their new home delivery and distribution service from Liskeard, and the loss of the promised new jobs, in favour of operating the service from across the border in Devon.’

Morrison’s is awaiting a planning decision on the new home shopping centre at Exeter, but the company already has permission for its new storage and distribution unit at Plymstock.
