ARMED police swooped on Tideford yesterday in response to a report of a man and woman making threats at a house in the centre of the village, with a suggestion that a weapon could be involved. The A38 was closed by police as they dealt with the incident. The main road remained shut for almost two hours between Landrake and Trerulefoot roundabout, with diversions in place. Traffic built up causing long delays. Police were called to Quay Road, on part of the main road, at 9.13am. Officers and negotiators attended the scene and at 11.10am a 43-year-old man from Tideford was arrested for making threats to kill, and causing fear of, or provocation of violence. Police said he was found to be in possession of a knife and that during a search of the property nothing else was discovered. The man was taken to Launceston Police Station where he was held in custody. Villagers living and working near the property at the centre of the incident were asked by police to remain indoors. Other residents quickly became aware of the situation because of the presence of a large number of officers, with some wearing flak jackets. At Paul Bray & Son Butchers, which is on the main road, owner Paul Bray said: 'The police came and asked me and the staff to remain inside. Only a few people ventured out to come to the shop.' Hannah Powell, the deputy manager of Tideford's Montessori Nursery, said they didn't receive a visit from the police but they were alerted when a concerned parent rang to find out if everyone was okay. 'We had about 20 children and we immediately took all of them indoors and went into lockdown as soon as we were alerted,' she said. 'We then rang the police who told us the incident was contained in a house and, after being told there was no-one running loose around the village with a weapon, we felt reassured.'
