A carpentry apprentice from Lostwithiel is recorded as the first known apprentice in Cornwall. The 1541 record which shows William Helyer as an apprentice was discovered by the producers of a film celebrating National Apprentice Week. The documentary, by Cornwall College Group, looks back at the history of apprenticeships in Cornwall. Apprenticeships in England can be traced back to the medieval craft guilds in the Middle Ages, originating from the custom of wealthy parents sending children away to live with host families.
