Just days after council officials defended conditions at a notorious A38 accident black spot, a person had to be cut from a campervan when it collided with another vehicle there. The collision occurred at the turn-off for Looe from the westbound carriageway of the A38 near Horningtops, which has a history of accidents. MP Sheryll Murray, who drove past the crash scene, immediately contacted Transport Minister John Hayes to express her concerns. Only the previous week county councillors rejected proposals for a travellers' transit site adjoining the turn-off, citing the dangerous junction as one of their reasons, although council officials had raised no objections on highway grounds. The Highways Agency also raised no objection and said a scheme to improve the A38 at nearby Lean Quarry was in the early stages of a plan to 'grade separate' the junction. The latest crash took place at just after 11am on Friday and involved a Peugeot Boxer 330 motor caravan and a Ford Transit panel van. A man in his 80s and woman in her 70s, from St Columb, were trapped in the campervan, with the man unconscious and the woman initially unresponsive. Both were freed by the fire service and treated by ambulance staff before being taken to Derriford Hospital along with the other vehicle's male driver, who had suspected chest injuries. A small dog found in one vehicle was taken to Liskeard police station and had to be temporarily taken into care by the dog warden. Mrs Murray witnessed the aftermath of the incident and wrote to the Transport Minister: 'I saw the aftermath of a further accident at the junction with the B3252 on this very dangerous stretch of road. While driving past this junction on the same morning, I had to slow for a vehicle which had crossed my path. 'SE Cornwall is mainly served by the A38 and I genuinely believe use will increase with the start of the A30 improvements at Temple. I am therefore writing to ask if you have any suggestions as to how finance can be made available in order that this dangerous junction can be improved to ensure that the accident record is reduced, if not eliminated.'
