This area of woodland to the north west of Liskeard is full of trails and tracks to explore.
Highwood, managed by Tilhill Forestry, links the town to the moorland beyond by virtue of the old track bed for the Caradon Mining Railway that runs through it.
At this time of year especially, the wood is a tranquil haven filled with scents of pine and wild garlic and with bluebells just beginning to unfurl.
Look out for historical features of interest such as the tunnel under the track bed and the Old Mill House at the end of the woodland.
With late afternoon spring sunshine filtering through the tall trees, the occasional glimpse of a hovering bird of prey in the valley, and often just the sounds of pheasant call or cattle breaking the quiet, you might never know you’re just a stone’s throw from the A38!
Reporter Kerenza Moore says: ’This gem is not exactly hidden! It is mentioned on a Town Council walk leaflet - and enjoyed by many who live in the town. But for anyone that doesn’t know it, I would encourage you to spend an hour in this lovely place, you’re sure to find your spirits lifted by nature here.’
Do you want to take part in ’Hidden gems on my daily walk?’
We’d love to hear from you wherever you are in South East Cornwall, and we hope your descriptions will provide inspiration not only for people in your town or village - but for readers all over the district thinking ahead to after the lockdown lifts, when we can all go out and explore new places!
If you’re self-isolating at the moment and unable to get out for walks, you’re not excluded: do send us photos from your favourite spots in South East Cornwall or beyond.
How to take part:
Send your photo(s) to [email protected] or to The Cornish Times by direct private Facebook message.
Include your name, where you live, and a description of your chosen ’hidden gem’, telling people why it’s such a special place.
We hope to publish reader contributions online and in the print paper.
