CALLINGTON firefighters issued a safety warning after they were called to a fire started by a tea light in the early hours of today (Saturday, April 2).

One appliance was sent to a property at St Mellion after a report that there had been a fire involving a duvet that was now out. Firefighters confirmed the fire had been started by tea light candles.

They advised: ’Tea light candles may be small but they get hot enough to melt plastic and ignite combustible materials. Ensure that they are placed on a heat-resistant surface and a safe distance from other combustible materials.’
